"She realized she was lucky - because she could actually see it - how the trees got more beautiful each year...how they danced with such graceful pride, surviving each season's change...and she knew their beauty lied not in the perfection, but the growth...and she could see it - in the trees, the people around her, and some days, even in herself...and so she would dance" ~Jodi Hills

The Jewish Sabbath
According to my Dad, who knows much more than I do about Jewish traditions, calendars and religion, yesterday was not really the Jewish Sabbath. But we celebrated as though it were. We ate a traditional (sort of, but not really) Jewish Sabbath meal, much like what Jesus might have eaten when he lived on the earth. I did not have time (bad planning) to make their flatbread, so I just made our pizza dough recipe and twisted the two loaves together like the Jewish would do. That is a reminder of the Lord feeding their people twice the amount of Manna on the day before Sabbath so they would be able to cease their labors on the Sabbath.
For Jewish people, the Sabbath was meant to be a day of joy and rejoicing. Imagine how his apostles felt on the Sabbath before the resurrection, and just after the crucifixion. It must have been a difficult day for them, one that was supposed to carry with it so much joy.Little did they know the joy they would feel the following day.
We ate eggs, raisins (we pretended they were dates), and goat's cheese. We also had fish and olives and grape juice. We covered our heads and lit candles, and we had a great time with good conversations.
So today is the day we celebrate His resurrection. Springtime is my favorite time of the year! It brings hope and joy and relief. I am so grateful for my Savior and for what He's done for me. I know He lives!
"In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
"And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
"And the angel...said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
"He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."

What fun and a great experience. Love the dress up.
ReplyDeleteOh. And I think you may mean "Passover" instead of "Sabbath" (though the passover was another sabbath for the Jews)
ReplyDeleteWe always do a "Jerusalem Dinner" for our kids shortly before Easter. Our menu typically includes grapes, almonds, dates or dried apricots (though nobody likes them), cantaloupe, cucumbers, pita bread, olives, and a really delicious bulgur wheat pilaf with red onion and coriander. Our kids look forward to it every year. We eat laying on the floor, with no plates or utensils, just eating from common dishes. The kids think it is the best thing ever, and for the most part it is many of their favorite foods. All the food is so easy to prepare, too.
