Obituary:
FRASER, JOHN L. M.B. (Lond.), F.R.C.S (C)Major, Royal Artillery, W.W. II
Died after a brief illness. John had finished first year at medical school when W.W. II began. He enlisted as a private soldier and served in the 14th Army in Burma, eventually being promoted to Major and Battery Commander. His regiment fought at the sieges of Imphal and Kohima, then crossed the Chindwin River against heavy resistance and eventually ended at the gates of Mandalay. After being in action for over two years without a break, he was flown out and repatriated to England.
He returned to medical school at the Royal London Hospital, graduating in 1952. He emigrated to Canada and worked as a Family Physician for a couple of years then attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore after which he practiced as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Queensway General Hospital. During his medical career, his researches and published work made him one of the pioneers in the discovery of Folic acid in the prevention of fetal abnormalities.
John had a wide range of interests outside medicine, particularly in sailing, tennis, farming, reading, music and classical history. He is predeceased by his beloved daughter Allison Jane, whose death so devastated him.
He is survived by his wife Muriel, best friend and loving companion, and by his children Simon (Katy), Stephen (Kathy), Neil and Sara (Garry) and 10 grandchildren all of whom were very close to his heart.
We would like to pay tribute to his physician Dr. Mark Quigg, of Collingwood who took such good care of him. John said that he combined two essential qualities of a good doctor – knowledge and compassion.
A celebration of his life will be held at Fawcett Funeral Home, 82 Pine St. Collingwood on Wednesday December 28, 2011 from 1-4 p.m. with a time of reflection at 1 p.m. followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers donations to the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital would be appreciated.
My Grandpa passed away last night. He was someone I greatly admired, and I love him. One year ago and a week I wrote a poem when a friend passed away. I want to share it here again, in memory of Grandpa who is now in heaven's embrace.
Heaven's Embrace
by Elaine Curry - December 14, 2010
Faith faded with my final breath,
Knowledge filled it's space.
Limp hand released his mortal grip,
Then upward turned my face.
My backward glance contained a prayer,
For those I left behind.
A distance felt by love earth-bound,
Yet I stood peacefully by his side.
It took me into it's limitless arms,
Wrapped peace around my soul.
I cried for joy and
I then knew what I had always known.
It's glorious knowing reminded me
And veil parted to show His view.
Revealing, soothing, teaching me,
My time on earth was through.
I took a step and wondered at,
Eternity circling 'round.
I'm yet alive!
I'm near to you, my work continues on!
