Goodbye Chocolate Chip

Chocolate Chip, our hamster, has been under the weather the last month or so.  Each time we walk by his cage, we peek in and make sure he's breathing.  We've been telling him how awesome he is, too.  He's been a sweet little pet.  I know, some of you just don't get it, but we love him.  This past week or so his breathing had become more labored, and I felt that his time was short.  Last week we moved him to Nicole and Heidi's bedroom because we are trying to make our home look open and spacious, and his tank in the family room just looked off.  But it made me sad.  I knew that he would be gone soon, and having him out of our living area made my heart heavy.

Each day I would run upstairs a few times to look at him, and see if he was okay.  Today after church I did just that, and he looked really bad. I felt like he wouldn't last another 24 hours. I called Heidi up and we held him, and tried to get him to eat and drink to no avail.  He did bite me when I tried to give him water on my finger.  He couldn't stand up, and so we said goodbye.

Tonight we went to Damian's birthday party with the family, and when we came home we checked on Chocolate Chip and he was gone.  We buried him in the front garden next to Nicole's little Cookie.

It's sad for us.  I know it's the circle of life, but when we go through these things, I wonder why we have pets. It breaks our hearts when they are gone.  We took the cage out right away, and the empty place is felt.  :(

  1. I'm so sorry! (I'm a little happy to know that you love your pets as much as we love ours, but mostly I'm sad for you!) I know it's a bit early (and it is totally off topic), but I also know that the rest of my week is crazy, so I wanted to wish Nicole a happy (early) birthday! Please give her a hug for me and tell her that we love her, are thinking about her, and hoping that she has a super special day. Love you guys! ~Lindsey

  2. Aw Elaine! I'm sorry...It's never easy losing a pet, is it? But I'm sure you all have great memories of him to hold onto forever. :) I hope things are great with you guys, with home schooling and moving and all! You're in my thoughts & prayers. LOVE YOU ALL oxo

  4. Elaine, I totally get it. When my hamsters and guinea pigs died I was so sad, but then I felt dumb for feeling sad cause they're just rodents. When my cute little guinea pig died from a respiratory infection, I felt so bad that he was suffering. On a side note, what a cute name for a pet!

  5. Amy, ya, that whole "it's only a rodent" thought is hard for me to swallow. I loved the little guy (most of the time). We actually prayed a few times for his suffering to be relieved the last month of his life...we knew he was on his way out, and it was obvious he was in distress.
