We've practically cut out all television watching and movies. We figure out kids have great imaginations and they can use them. They get plenty of tv at grandparent's homes, and we are trying to promote an environment where they seek more independent learning and play. It was hard for a week or two...they whined and complained and told us the world was ending...but we don't hear them asking us anymore. It's great. They play all day long with each other and although they do argue, they seem to be getting along much better than before.
This past week, summer hit, and they've watched a couple of movies. Today they watched 2, and it's 8:15 and Sean and I thought we would curl up in bed with the laptop and watch a Momflick. It's too early for the kids to go to bed, and we wondered what we could do to distract them so we could have some quiet time to ourselves. We decided that we'd let them watch a third movie (gasp!) and Sean said, "Hey guys, feel free to watch another movie if you'd like." I then heard a chorus of, "no thanks" and, "Do we have to?" and "that's okay." They were too busy playing dress up. And Cassidy is "reading" a novel (she's on page 18, you know).
Heavens to Betsy, did I really just hear that? I had to write it down, because I might forget it.
LOVE IT!
