My "Brown" Grandma passed away last night, June 2, 2011 at about 10:30 pm. She was my biological father's mother, and as a child, I visited with her often in her home, and when we moved away from Richmond Hill, she would come to Yellowknife, and then to Florida, to visit with us. She was a strong woman of faith, and she gave me my first bible shortly after my baptism. It was a pretty white one, and she signed the inside of it. I still have it. I knew this was coming, and a few weeks ago Aunt Mary sent me an email to let me know she was ailing. I wrote this little poem for Aunt Mary to read to her. I hope she felt the love in it, and I hope she knows that I love her. Enjoy your rest, Grandma.
This is what Aunt Mary emailed to me after she read my poem to Grandma, I am including it because I want to remember it. "I read your poem to her very slowly and loud. Then taped it on her wall. She pointed to it later and do not know what she was trying to say, but it made me think maybe she remembers me reading to her."
Brown Grandma's Place
May 22, 2011
Dear Grandma,
I can still see your smile in my mind's eye,
Hear the echo of your rich laugh,
Feel your spirit through the twinkle that was in your eyes.
There is a place in my heart that belongs only to you.
Today's news brings me right back to that space
in your arms, your love around me.
It's a place of loving memories,
It's red rooster and Yellowknife.
It's in your home, with noxema on your feet.
I love you.
I thank your for your faith,
of which I inherited a portion.
I will see you on the other side.
See your smile, hear your laugh,
Feel your spirit - that twinkle.
Your arms will wrap around me again,
In that old, familiar place
that is only ours.
God be with you,
'till we meet again.
Love,
Your granddaughter Elaine
That was beautiful. My grandmaused Noxema too and I had completely forgotten about it--I can smell it like it was yesterday. :)
